Your Work Introduces You
Years ago, when I first joined Tripadvisor, we had a tool that moved data to Amazon Redshift. One of the engineers went on holiday, the tool had a few bugs, and people were blocked. It needed immediate attention.
I jumped in. I stayed until almost 1 a.m. some nights. Sometimes I had to manually hold things together, debug issues on the fly, and make sure everyone using the tool got their job done. It was not glamorous work. It was messy, operational, and urgent. But almost everyone remembered me from that moment on, including the VP.
When you start a new job, you are starting a reputation. What you did before got you hired. What you do now defines you. That is why I always give the same advice. Whatever you do, do it as best as you can, but especially your first PR, first meeting, first report, first presentation.

People Anchor On Early Signals
In a new environment, people do not have much data on you. So they use whatever is visible. Your first few pieces of work become proxies for how you operate. A clean PR suggests care, judgment, and respect for other people’s time. A sharp design document suggests clarity. A strong presentation suggests you understand the difference between information and signal. A good meeting contribution suggests you know how to listen, think, and speak with intent.
The reverse is also true. A vague design, a bloated presentation, a sloppy PR, or a meeting where you ramble without adding much creates a counter reference point. Once that point exists, people start interpreting your later work through it. That is why early sloppiness is expensive. You can recover from it, of course, but it takes more effort to change a weak narrative than to start with a strong one.
Reputation is Built Through Usefulness
Many people want to look impressive. Your job is to be useful. I was not trying to create visibility. I was solving a real problem that was hurting other people. The system was stuck, people were waiting, and I helped move it again.
People remember usefulness under pressure. They remember who helped when something was blocked, who brought clarity when things were messy and who stayed with the problem instead of turning it into someone else’s problem. Early work teaches people what to expect from you. Show them what good looks like.
Moreover, reputation is not social polish. I have seen people join teams and make a strong first impression through talk, only to fade once actual work starts. I have also seen quieter people build a very strong reputation because their work was consistently high quality and their presence made things easier. Talk gets attention. Useful work earns trust. Trust lasts. It compounds. You get more room, more influence, and better opportunities.
Be Careful With Early Overreach
There is one more thing worth saying. Some people hear making an impact early and immediately try to redesign everything. They join, spot something messy, and start acting like they have already decoded the whole system. This often backfires.
Every company has strange-looking decisions that only make sense once you understand the constraints behind them. Some things are genuinely bad. Fine. But some things look bad only because you do not yet know the failure modes, the history, or the trade-offs.
So yes, bring standards. Yes, bring energy. Yes, be useful early. But do not confuse that with charging around trying to prove superior taste. You do not build a good reputation by being loudly right too early. You build it by understanding enough of the system to improve it without creating unnecessary damage.
In Short
A new job is an inference window, often inside a system that is not set up to help you ramp up properly. You are expected to move fast with partial context, weak onboarding, and missing documentation, and people still need to decide how much to trust you. So they build a working model of you from limited evidence.
That is why the goal early on is not to look impressive. It is to be easy to trust under uncertainty, to reduce noise, lower coordination cost, and leave the system around you a little clearer and steadier than you found it.
